Enhancements

Textile Technologies can further enhance the above webbing tapes as follows:
Adhesive Backing

Apply a special sacrificial high temperature self adhesive to aid applying the webbing in situ.

Apply a dry black graphite dispersion to improve abrasion resistance and aesthetics.

Apply a vermiculite dispersion to improve abrasion resistance and increase its temperature resistance up to 1000°C and create an extra barrier against molten metal splash.

Apply a heat treatment to heat set and caramelise the webbing and drive off any excess volatiles e.g. starch / binders.

Thermal Silica Webbings can have central warp yarns removed to create a ladder effect. The webbings are commonly known as glass ladder tapes in the UK or drop warp tapes in the USA. For more information please click here.

FAQs

What is silica webbing tape used for?
Textile Technologies Silica webbing tape is used for extreme temperature exhaust and hot pipe insulation and stress relieving in heat treatment insulation applications. It is also used as molten splash protection especially if coated with vermiculite dispersion

Silica webbing tape exhibits excellent chemical stability, resists temperatures up to 1000°C in optimum conditions, is incombustible, and does not vitrify at lower temperatures. It is also resistant to organic agents, water, and hot acids (except hydrofluoric acid). Silica webbing is an excellent substitute for refractory ceramic webbing (RCF Webbing) and asbestos webbing.

Silica webbing is often referred to as high silica webbing because it is the silicon dioxide (SiO2) that is between 94-98% depending on the grade of silica. The high percentage of SiO2 compared with E Glass is what gives the webbing its elevated temperature rating.

Silica webbing tape is made by weaving textured or non-textured continuous filament S-TEX silica yarn, combining excellent temperature resistance and strength. It can be manufactured up to 500mm wide and is available in various thicknesses.

Alternatives include Textile Technologies S-TEX silica webbing, Textile Technologies HT750 or HR800 Glass Webbing which whilst have slightly lower temperature maximums generally have higher tensile strength. For the ultimate extreme temperature webbing Textile Technologies can offer Alumina Webbing Tape. Whilst this can maintain continuous temperatures up to 1250C, its expense dictates its generally reserved for critical applications or where longevity is required.

What is Silica Webbing?

Silica webbing is a high performance woven textile material designed for high temperature applications where conventional insulation products may fail. These specialised tapes are produced using high silica content yarns, typically derived from treated glass fibre or high purity glass filaments.

The webbing tape structure provides excellent strength, durability and flexibility, allowing the webbing to perform effectively in demanding industrial environments. Because the fibres contain a very high percentage of silica, the material can withstand continuous temperatures approaching 1000 C while maintaining structural stability.

Compared with conventional glass fibre textiles such as e glass, silica webbing provides significantly higher heat resistance and improved performance in extreme high temperature conditions. The result is a webbing product that is widely used in industrial insulation, sealing, and thermal protection applications.

Due to its inorganic composition, silica webbing tape is also highly resistant to many chemicals, oils and industrial contaminants. This makes it particularly suitable for use in aggressive environments where both thermal and chemical stability are required.

Materials and Construction of Silica Webbing Tape

The performance of silica webbing tape comes from the combination of specialised glass yarn technology and precision woven textile manufacturing. High purity silica yarns are processed from treated glass fibres and then woven into dense webbing structures that deliver both thermal stability and mechanical strength.

These tapes can be manufactured using either textured yarn or continuous filament glass yarn, depending on the required type of webbing and its intended applications. The weaving process produces a strong and dimensionally stable webbing tape capable of maintaining performance at continuous temperatures of up to 1000 C.

Different products may also incorporate wire reinforced constructions for additional mechanical durability in demanding high temperature applications such as furnace sealing, industrial boilers, and heavy duty exhaust systems.

As a result, the finished silica webbing material offers a reliable solution where traditional glass fibre fabrics or ceramic fibre textiles may be unsuitable or where reduced fibre irritation is preferred.

Silica Webbing for High Temperature Sealing and Insulation

One of the most common applications for silica webbing tape is thermal sealing in industrial heat processing equipment. The dense webbing structure allows the tapes to compress and conform around surfaces, making them highly effective for furnace doors, kilns and industrial boilers.

In these applications, silica webbing is frequently installed as ladder tapes or ladder style webbing, which allow fixing points for bolts or mechanical fasteners while maintaining a flexible thermal barrier. This design enables reliable sealing around access doors and inspection panels exposed to extreme high temperature conditions.

The material is also widely used around hot pipes, heat treatment equipment and industrial ducting where thermal expansion and vibration require a webbing tape capable of maintaining strength and flexibility. Because silica textiles remain stable at continuous temperatures approaching 1000 C, they are ideal for demanding high temperature applications across heavy industry.

Industrial Applications of Silica Webbing Tape

Thanks to its excellent thermal stability, silica webbing tape is used in a wide range of industrial applications involving heat protection, insulation and sealing. The high silica content material allows these tapes to operate safely in environments where conventional glass fibre insulation would degrade.

Typical applications include:

  • Thermal sealing on furnaces, kilns and industrial boilers

  • Insulation for hot pipes, manifolds and exhaust systems

  • Pipe lagging for thermal management in energy and process industries

  • Protective wrapping for hot pipes and ducting systems

  • Stress relieving insulation during welding or heat treatment processes

  • High performance insulation products used in petrochemical and power generation industries

Because the webbing tape construction combines mechanical durability with excellent thermal stability, these products perform reliably in many demanding high temperature applications.

Ladder Tapes and Specialised Webbing Designs

In many high temperature applications, silica webbing is produced as ladder tapes or ladder webbing structures. These designs include regularly spaced gaps within the woven webbing tape, allowing mechanical fasteners or bolts to pass through the insulation system without damaging the material.

This configuration is commonly used for furnace door sealing, removable insulation covers, and expansion joint systems where the webbing must be securely fixed to metal frameworks or square door channels.

Ladder tapes offer excellent installation flexibility while maintaining the same thermal performance as standard silica webbing tape. The design also allows the webbing to expand and contract with heat cycles, helping the tapes perform effectively in long-term high temperature service.

Coatings, Enhancements and Installation Options

To improve performance in specific environments, silica webbing tape can be supplied with a range of specialised treatments and enhancements. These modifications help the tapes deliver improved durability, abrasion resistance and installation convenience in demanding applications.

Common options include:

  • Self adhesive backing to simplify installation during maintenance or retrofit applications

  • Vermiculite coatings to improve resistance to molten splash and radiant heat

  • Graphite dispersions to increase lubrication and reduce friction in moving sealing systems

  • Heat treatment processes that stabilise the woven material and reduce organic content

The tapes can be supplied in a variety of widths and thickness options, depending on the insulation requirement. Textile Technologies maintains an extensive stock of standard silica webbing products, ensuring fast delivery for urgent industrial projects.

Because these webbing tape solutions are designed for extremely high temperature applications, customers can be confident that the products will perform reliably in critical thermal protection systems.
